Yo!!! Welcome back to the TEAM NUTZ blog!!! So, you’re looking at your truck and thinking, "Man, this thing needs some CHONK." You want that aggressive stance, those meaty treads, and that "I-could-drive-over-a-boulder" look. We get it – WE LOVE THAT STUFF TOO!!!
But before you pull the trigger on those massive 35s or 37s, you gotta know what’s coming for your wallet at the gas pump and your dashboard’s sanity. Today, we’re talking about the REAL DEAL when it comes to BIG TIRES and SMALL MPG.
Is it gonna kill your fuel economy?? Will your speedometer lie to you?? Let’s break it down, Pittsburgh style!
Look, we’re not gonna sugarcoat it – those big ol' tires are HEAVY. It’s called rotational mass, and it’s basically the enemy of fuel efficiency. When you add a few pounds to each corner of your truck, your engine has to work WAY HARDER just to get those wheels spinning.
Think about it like this: Is it easier to run a marathon in Nikes or combat boots?? Exactly.

Oversized tires – especially the aggressive mud-terrain types – have a huge contact patch with the road. While that’s great for gripping the mud out in the WASHINGTION COUNTY HILLS, it creates a ton of friction on the highway. More friction = more fuel. You’re basically fighting the road every inch of the way.
Most factory tires are designed to be light and efficient. When you swap ‘em for a set of HEAVY DUTY off-roaders, you might be adding 20, 30, or even 40 pounds per tire. That’s like carrying a small child on each wheel. Your engine is gonna feel that, especially when you’re trying to merge onto ROUTE 51 or climb up those steep South Hills inclines!!
This is the part that trips people up the most. Your truck’s computer was programmed for a specific tire size. It counts how many times the tire rotates to tell you how fast you’re going.
BUT GET THIS: When you put on a bigger tire, it covers more ground in one single rotation.
If your speedometer says you’re doing 60 MPH, but you’ve jumped from a 31-inch tire to a 35-inch tire… you’re actually doing closer to 68 MPH!!!
That’s a one-way ticket to a "friendly" conversation with a state trooper on the PA TURNPIKE. Not only is your speed wrong, but your ODOMETER is also recording fewer miles than you’re actually driving. Your truck thinks it’s been 100 miles, but you’ve actually traveled 110.

Let’s talk about our backyard. Driving a lifted truck in PITTSBURGH is a different beast. We’ve got hills that would make a mountain goat nervous.
When you upsize your tires without re-gearing or recalibrating, your truck is gonna spend more time hunting for the right gear. It’ll feel "sluggy" when you’re trying to get up MCKNIGHT ROAD or climbing toward MT. WASHINGTON. You’ll notice the transmission shifting more often, which, you guessed it, BURNS MORE GAS.
But don't panic!!! There's a way to fix it.
You don’t have to just "live with" a lying speedometer. At TEAM NUTZ, we can help you get your truck’s brain back in sync with its new shoes!
We use specialized CALIBRATION TOOLS and tuners that plug right into your truck's port to tell the computer exactly what size tires you’re running. This fixes your shift points, corrects your speedometer, and makes your truck feel like it’s got its "pep" back.

Pro-Tip: If you’re going HUGE (like 37s or bigger), you might want to talk to us about re-gearing your differentials. It’s a bigger project, but it’s the ONLY way to truly win back your MPG and power.
HECK YES IT IS!!!
Look, nobody buys a truck because they want Prius-level fuel economy. You buy a truck to be CAPABLE, to look BOSS, and to handle whatever the PA weather throws at you. You might lose 1-3 MPG on average, but the trade-off is a truck that looks and performs exactly how you want.
Just make sure you do it THE RIGHT WAY – get the right offset, get the right clearance, and for the love of all things holy, RECALIBRATE YOUR DASH!!!

Q: Exactly how much MPG will I lose?
A: Usually, you’re looking at a drop of 1 to 3 MPG. It depends on how "aggressive" the tread is and how much heavier the new tires are compared to stock. If you go from a street tire to a full mud-terrain, expect the bigger drop!
Q: Do I really need to recalibrate my speedometer?
A: YES!!! Unless you like getting speeding tickets or having your transmission shift at the wrong times. It’s an "investment" in your truck's long-term health (and your driving record).
Q: Will bigger tires affect my braking?
A: Yup. Heavier tires take more energy to stop. You might notice your brakes feeling a bit softer. If you go super big, we might recommend upgrading your pads and rotors too!
Q: Can I just use a GPS app on my phone to see my real speed?
A: You could… but that won't fix your truck's transmission shift points or your odometer. Why be "halfway" done when you can do it right at TEAM NUTZ??
Give us a shout or swing by the shop!!! We’ve got the wheels, the tires, and the tech to make your truck the baddest on the block. Whether you're a DIYer shopping at DIYCustoms.store or you want the PROS to handle the install, we got you covered.
