Yo, welcome back to the blog, yinz guys!!! If you’ve been scrolling through Insta or TikTok lately, you’ve probably seen some insane videos of people literally LIGHTING CARS ON FIRE or beating them with lighters and then wiping them off like nothing happened. They keep screaming about this "9H CERAMIC COATING" like it’s some kind of invisible Vibranium shield from a Marvel movie.
But hold up – let’s get REAL for a second. We get people calling the shop every single day asking, "Hey Team Nutz, if I get that 9H coating, I’m good against those nasty rock chips on the Parkway, right?"
Well, sit down, grab a coffee (or a Primanti’s sandwich, we don't judge), and let’s bust some myths!!! Because we love your car as much as you do, and we don't want you thinking your ride is BULLETPROOF when it’s actually just… really, really shiny.
Okay, so let’s talk about that "9H" thing. Most people hear "9H" and they think of the Mohs Hardness Scale. You know, like diamonds are a 10 and talc is a 1. If a coating was a 9 on the Mohs scale, it would be almost as hard as a diamond!
SPOILER ALERT: It’s not. Not even close.
When we talk about 9H in the detailing world, we’re actually talking about the PENCIL HARDNESS TEST. Basically, they take a bunch of pencils and see which one is hard enough to scratch the surface. A "9H" pencil is the hardest standard lead pencil you can buy. So, a 9H coating just means it won't get scratched by a… checks notes… piece of graphite.
Does that sound like it’s gonna stop a jagged piece of limestone flying off a dump truck at 80mph?? NOPE!!!

Let’s be 100% CRYSTAL CLEAR here – CERAMIC COATING WILL NOT STOP ROCK CHIPS.
I know, I know. You saw the video with the guy hitting the hood with a hammer. Don’t believe everything you see on the "inner-net" folks! A ceramic coating is thinner than a human hair. It’s a liquid polymer that bonds to your paint and hardens. It’s amazing for a lot of things, but it’s just too thin to absorb the impact of a rock.
If a stone hits your hood at highway speeds, it’s going right through that coating and into your paint. BAM. New chip.
SO WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?
If you want real, physical protection against the gravel and debris we have here in Pittsburgh – especially during construction season – you need PAINT PROTECTION FILM (PPF). We call it "Clear Bra." It’s a thick, self-healing urethane film that actually absorbs the blow. Think of ceramic coating as a HIGH-END WAX ON STEROIDS and PPF as a BODY ARMOR VEST.
PRO TIP: The ultimate combo is putting PPF on the front end and then COATING THE WHOLE CAR (including the film!) for that insane gloss and easy cleaning.
Now, this is where it gets a little "gray area-ish." A 9H coating IS harder than your car’s factory clear coat. That means it can help prevent those annoying "swirl marks" you get from crappy car washes or using a dirty towel.
But is it SCRATCH-PROOF? H* NO!!!**
The coating acts as a SACRIFICIAL LAYER. It takes the beating so your actual paint doesn't have to. But you still gotta be careful and use the right detailing tools and techniques!!
By now you’re probably thinking, "Geez Team Nutz, why would I even spend the money if it doesn't stop rocks??"
Because CERAMIC COATING IS STILL AWESOME, that's why!!! Check out what it actually does:

We see those "Ceramic Spray" bottles for $20 at the auto parts store. And hey, for a DIY project, those are fine for a few weeks of shine. But a PROFESSIONAL 9H COATING is a whole different beast.
About 80% of what you’re paying for isn't the liquid in the bottle – it’s the PAINT CORRECTION.
Before we lock that coating in for years, we have to make sure the paint is PERFECT. That means hours and hours of buffing, polishing, and removing every single tiny scratch and swirl. If we coat over a scratch, that scratch is now a permanent resident under the coating!
Our pros at Team Nutz are artists with a polisher. We spend the time to make your ride look better than the day it rolled off the assembly line. Check out our ceramic coating packages to see what fits your budget!

Listen, we live in the land of potholes, salt trucks, and unpredictable weather. Your car takes a beating here in the 412. Whether you're driving a brand new Vette or a lifted truck you just got from our truck accessories department, protecting that paint is the smartest "investment" you can make to keep your resale value high.
Don't let the myths fool you – be smart about your protection! If you want the TRUTH and the BEST SERVICE in town, come see us!

Q: Can I put ceramic coating over my vinyl wrap?
A: YES!!! It’s actually a great idea. It helps protect the wrap from UV fading and makes it way easier to keep clean. Just make sure you use a coating specifically designed for vinyl or matte finishes if you don't want it to get super shiny!
Q: How long does a pro coating last?
A: Depending on the package you choose, it can last anywhere from 2 to 5+ years! But you gotta maintain it. Don't go through those "slap-and-scratch" automatic car washes with the big brushes!!!
Q: Why am I seeing water spots on my coated car?
A: Since the coating makes water bead up, if those beads dry in the hot sun, the minerals in the water get left behind. It’s not the coating failing – it’s just the water! Use a "drying aid" or a leaf blower to get that water off after you wash it.
Q: Does it protect against bird poop?
A: Yes! The chemical resistance is one of the best features. Bird droppings are super acidic and can eat through your clear coat in hours. A coating gives you a much bigger window to wipe it off before it does damage.
Q: Should I coat my wheels too?
A: 100% YES. It makes brake dust fall right off with just a hose. No more scrubbing those intricate spokes for an hour!
