Wheel Fitment 101: Offset, Backspacing, and Bolt Patterns Explained

If you’ve been looking to level up your ride with some SICK NEW RIMS, you’ve probably heard people throwing around words like offset, backspacing, and bolt patterns. 🏎️💨 It sounds like a math test, right?? DON’T PANIC!! We’re here to break it all down so you don’t end up buying CUSTOM WHEELS PITTSBURGH that don’t actually fit your truck or car.

Buying the wrong wheels is a TOTAL NIGHTMARE – they could rub against your brakes, stick out way too far, or even worse… NOT BOLT ON AT ALL! 😱 We see it happen all the time when people try to DIY it without knowing the basics. So, grab a coffee (or a beer, we don’t judge!) and let’s get into the nitty-gritty of RIMS AND TIRES PITTSBURGH!

WHAT IS BOLT PATTERN?? (AND WHY IT’S STEP 1)

Okay, listen up – before you even look at how cool a wheel looks, you gotta check the BOLT PATTERN. This is basically the "handshake" between your wheel and your car. If the fingers don't line up, it ain't happenin'!!

Most cars have 4, 5, 6, or 8 lugs. You’ll see numbers like 5×114.3 or 6×139.7.

• The first number is how many bolts you got.
• The second number is the diameter of the circle they make!

PRO TIP: If you try to force a wheel with the wrong pattern on… well, you’re gonna have a BAD TIME. It’s gotta be EXACT. No "close enough" here, buddy!! 🙅‍♂️

OFFSET VS. BACKSPACING: THE "STANCE" SECRET

This is where things get a little trippy. 🌀 Both of these tell you where the wheel is gonna sit in your wheel well. Do you want that DEEP DISH look where the wheels poke out? Or do you want them tucked in nice and tight??

OFFSET (The Metric Stuff)

Offset is measured in millimeters (mm). It’s the distance from the middle of the wheel to where it actually touches your hub.

• POSITIVE OFFSET: The mounting part is closer to the outside of the wheel. This pushes the wheel INWARD toward the suspension. Most modern front-wheel-drive cars love this!
• NEGATIVE OFFSET: The mounting part is closer to the inside. This pushes the wheel OUTWARD for that aggressive, "poke" look. Perfect for those lifted trucks we love here in the 412!! 🤘
• ZERO OFFSET: Right in the middle, baby!

BACKSPACING (The "Old School" Inches)

Backspacing is similar but it’s measured in inches from the back edge of the wheel to the mounting surface. It’s SUPER IMPORTANT for checking if the wheel is gonna hit your struts or control arms. If you got too much backspacing, you’re gonna hear a SCRAPE-SCRAPE-SCRAPE every time you turn the wheel. NOT COOL!!!

HUB BORE: DON’T FORGET THE HOLE IN THE MIDDLE!

Everyone forgets this one!! The HUB BORE is the big hole in the center of the wheel that slides over your car’s hub.

• HUB-CENTRIC: The hole fits perfectly. This is the best way because the hub carries the weight, not just the bolts.
• LUG-CENTRIC: The hole is bigger than your hub. You’ll need HUB RINGS to make it fit right, or you’re gonna feel a CRAZY VIBRATION at highway speeds!! 🫨

WHY FITMENT MATTERS FOR SAFETY (STAY ALIVE, FRIENDS!)

Getting this stuff right isn't just about looking "gucci" at the car meet. It’s about SAFETY!! 🛡️ If your wheels aren't fitted right:

1. YOU’LL TRASH YOUR TIRES: Rubbing on the fenders will slice through rubber like a hot knife through butter.
2. SUSPENSION STRESS: Wrong offset puts extra "leverage" on your bearings. They’ll wear out way faster and cost you BIG BUCKS down the line.
3. SCARY HANDLING: If your "scrub radius" is all wonky, your car might pull to one side or feel super jittery over bumps. NO THANKS!!
