Show-Ready Detailing: 7 Must-Dos Before the Team Nutz Car Cruise

The Team Nutz Car Cruise is almost here!!! On Saturday, September 12, 2026, we’re taking over the lot at the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department, and your ride deserves to show up looking its absolute BEST!!!

Whether you’re bringing a classic, custom, truck, muscle car, import, Jeep, motorcycle, or something totally one-of-a-kind, all makes and models are welcome. So yeah… there’s no excuse to roll in with dusty wheels, mystery crumbs, and paint that looks like it fought a tunnel wash. Just sayin’!

This event is about more than shiny vehicles and good times. 100% OF THE PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, so every cruise-in, conversation, and contribution helps support the people who help protect our community.

Before show day, use this 7-step show-ready detailing checklist to get your vehicle clean, glossy, protected, and ready for all the attention!!!

Professional exterior auto detailing services at Team Nutz Technology

1. START WITH A REAL TIMELINE , DON’T WAIT UNTIL FRIDAY NIGHT!!!

The biggest detailing mistake? Trying to do everything at the last second.

If your vehicle needs paint correction, ceramic coating preparation, or a full interior restoration, give yourself time. These aren’t quick “spray it and forget it” jobs. Your finish needs time to be cleaned, corrected, inspected, and protected the right way.

Here’s a smart cruise-prep timeline:

  • 10–14 days before: Wash, decontaminate, clay bar, and inspect the paint.
  • 7–10 days before: Complete paint correction and polish work.
  • 3–5 days before: Perform a final inspection in bright light and clean away polishing residue.
  • Several days before the cruise: Apply ceramic coating, graphene coating, sealant, or wax.
  • The day before: Handle the final light cleanup, not a giant correction project.

Heavy work should be finished BEFORE show weekend. You want to arrive relaxed, not sweating in the driveway at 1:00 a.m. wondering if that “quick polish” was actually a terrible idea. We’ve all been there!

2. WASH IT SAFELY , THE FOUNDATION FOR EVERYTHING ELSE

A show-ready finish starts with a safe wash. If you drag dirt and grit across your paint, you can create the very swirl marks you’re trying to remove. Not good. NOPE.

Start with a thorough rinse or pre-soak to loosen dirt. Then use:

  • A quality, pH-balanced automotive shampoo
  • Plenty of clean water
  • A soft microfiber wash mitt
  • Separate tools for the wheels and paint
  • The two-bucket method whenever possible

Wash from the top down, saving the dirtiest lower panels and wheels for last. Rinse your mitt often. Don’t use the same brush on your tires and your hood. Brake dust is abrasive, and your paint does not want any part of that mess.

At Team Nutz, our exterior detailing process goes far beyond a basic drive-thru wash. We clean the wheels, tires, trim, door jambs, glass, and painted surfaces so the entire vehicle looks consistent, not just the parts people see from ten feet away.

3. DECONTAMINATE THE PAINT , MAKE IT GLASS-SMOOTH

Your paint can look clean and still feel rough. That rough texture usually comes from bonded contamination such as:

  • Brake dust and iron fallout
  • Road tar
  • Tree sap
  • Industrial fallout
  • Road film and other stubborn grime

A proper decontamination wash and clay bar treatment removes those contaminants so your paint is smooth and ready for polishing or protection.

DON’T SKIP THIS STEP!!! If you polish over bonded contamination, you can drag those particles around the surface. If you apply ceramic coating over them, you may trap unwanted debris underneath your new protection. That’s not the show finish you’re after.

Our auto detailing team offers decontamination services, including clay bar treatment and iron and tar removal. We can also address excessive road paint when needed, because Pittsburgh roads don’t always play nice with your vehicle.

4. CORRECT THE PAINT , THIS IS WHERE THE GLOSS REALLY HAPPENS

A clean car is nice.

A properly corrected car is a whole different level!!!

Paint correction uses machine polishing to reduce the appearance of swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation, hazing, and other surface defects. The goal is to restore clarity and depth so the paint reflects light cleanly.

Depending on your vehicle’s condition and your goals, Team Nutz may recommend:

  • One-step correction for gloss enhancement and minor defects
  • Two-stage correction for heavier swirl marks and scratches
  • Three-stage correction for customers who want the best of the best

The right process depends on paint condition, paint thickness, color, age, and the result you’re chasing. A black vehicle with years of tunnel washes may need a different game plan than a newer truck with light wash marks.

IMPORTANT: Paint correction doesn’t mean every scratch magically disappears. Some defects are too deep to safely remove without risking the clear coat. A professional inspection helps determine what can be corrected safely, and what should be left alone.

That’s why paint correction is an investment in your vehicle’s appearance, not just another wash upgrade.

5. PREP THE SURFACE BEFORE CERAMIC COATING

Ceramic coating prep is all about the details. Before coating goes on, the paint needs to be:

  • Washed and fully decontaminated
  • Corrected and refined
  • Free of polishing oils and residue
  • Inspected under multiple lighting conditions
  • Completely dry and ready for bonding

CERAMIC COATING SHOULD NOT BE USED TO HIDE BAD PREP. If swirl marks, haze, or contamination are left underneath, your new coating can lock them in for a long time.

At Team Nutz, we offer ceramic and graphene coating services designed to add gloss, water repellency, easier maintenance, and long-term protection. Our coating services can be applied to painted surfaces and, depending on the project, wheels, headlights, taillights, chrome, PPF, bedliners, and other appropriate surfaces.

6. DON’T FORGET THE WHEELS, TIRES, TRIM, AND ENGINE BAY

Your vehicle’s paint may be perfect, but dirty wheels can ruin the whole presentation in about three seconds flat.

Give attention to:

  • Wheel faces and inner barrels
  • Brake dust around calipers
  • Tire sidewalls
  • Wheel wells
  • Exterior plastic trim
  • Running boards and steps
  • Exhaust tips
  • Door jambs
  • Engine bay, if you plan to display it

Tires should look clean and dressed, not greasy or dripping. Exterior trim should look refreshed, not covered in uneven shiny spots. If your hood is open at the cruise, the engine bay deserves attention too.

THE LITTLE DETAILS ADD UP!!! People notice clean lug nuts, spotless door jambs, polished exhaust tips, and wheel wells that don’t look like they’ve been collecting Pennsylvania since 2019.

7. DEEP-CLEAN THE INTERIOR AND PACK A SHOW-DAY KIT

A show car should look great inside and out. Vacuum the carpets, mats, seats, console, seat tracks, and those weird little crevices where receipts and French fries go to retire.

A complete interior detail may include:

  • Thorough vacuuming
  • Carpet and mat shampooing
  • Fabric or leather seat cleaning
  • Steam cleaning where appropriate
  • Dashboard and door panel cleaning
  • Leather conditioning
  • Glass cleaning
  • Door jamb cleaning
  • Odor treatment when needed

Team Nutz offers interior detailing packages that go far beyond a quick wipe-down. Our crew can help bring back that clean, comfortable, new-car-ish feeling before you pull into the cruise.

For show day, bring a small cleanup kit:

  • Clean microfiber towels
  • Quick detailer
  • Glass cleaner
  • Interior cleaner
  • Tire dressing
  • A soft detailing brush
  • Trash bags for the ride home

Use the kit for light dust and fingerprints only. DON’T START A FULL WASH IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SHOW LOT. You’re there to enjoy the cruise, meet fellow enthusiasts, support the fire department, and talk about your project!!!
